John & Sini get married! What a treat to photograph this special wedding. A Minnesotan and a Tennessean meet while each doing their own residency in pediatrics in Los Angeles. They fall in love and decide to celebrate that love with their families & friends.
The festivities were held at Sini's parents home in rural Tennessee, about 45 minutes north of Memphis. Not only was there a nice southern vibe at the wedding, there was also lots of Nigerian traditions in the mix. As a child of an immigrant parent myself, I always enjoy seeing various cultural traditions mixed into an American wedding. There were drummers at the ceremony, money thrown towards the bride while she searches for the groom among the guests, multiple outfit changes with Nigerian coral, dancing, drinking, eating, money-stars, soccer teammate hugs, and lots of laughs.
Remember that knockout sunset in Minneapolis? Well for me, that night was paired with a heartwarming fundraiser supporting Memorial Blood Centers, a nonprofit that saves lives with blood donations. At the event, which is full of food, drink & merriment, you hear harrowing and heartening stories of those who have survived due to blood donation. I'm happy to have been photographing Memorial Blood Centers' events for the past 4 or 5 years as each time I'm gladly reminded of different ways we can make our world a better place.
I had the honor of photographing a citizenship oath ceremony at the International Institute of Minnesota. Everyone was clearly happy and proud to become a citizen in this country. Their happiness was infectious.
The League of Women Voters were there volunteering, which also made me smile. Civics in action, working at its best, working for everyone. That is when our country shines.
